Drain flies or fruit flies?
Both are small, both appear suddenly, and both are in the kitchen or bathroom. But drain flies breed in the organic film inside your drain pipes, and fruit flies breed in fermenting food. Treating the wrong source — or using fly spray on either — will not resolve the infestation. The fix depends on which one you have.
Quick comparison
| Feature | Drain fly | Fruit fly |
|---|---|---|
| Wing shape | Broad, moth-like, held tent-flat | Narrow, held back along body |
| Body texture | Visibly hairy/fuzzy | Smooth |
| Eye colour | Dark compound eyes | Bright red — visible on close inspection |
| Where found | Walls near drains; resting passively | Hovering near fruit, bins, wine |
| Source | Organic biofilm in drain pipe walls | Fermenting fruit or food waste |
| Seasonal pattern | Year-round if drain is used | Summer/autumn peak; worse with fresh fruit |
| Correct fix | Deep drain cleaning (mechanical) | Remove fermenting source completely |
Drain fly
Moth fly, sink fly, sewer fly, Psychodidae
Appearance
Hairy moth-like body and wings. Wings are broad, oval, and held flat over the body (tent-like) when at rest. Body is covered in dense short hairs. Colour: grey-brown to black.
Breeding source
Organic biofilm (a thick layer of organic matter, soap scum, and bacteria) lining the interior walls of drain pipes. Larvae live and feed in this film for 1–3 weeks before emerging as adults.
Where found
Bathroom walls near drains, laundry room, utility rooms, commercial kitchens — anywhere with standing water or slow-draining pipes
Lifecycle
Egg to adult in 8–24 days depending on temperature. Adults live 2–3 weeks. Cannot survive without the drain biofilm to breed in.
Signs that point here:
- Tiny moth-like insects resting on bathroom walls or ceiling near the drain — they rarely fly until disturbed
- Insects appear after returning from several days away (undisturbed breeding in an unused drain)
- Concentrated near floor drains, shower drains, laundry drain, or bathroom sink
- Slow or partially blocked drains in the same area
- Wings have a distinctive moth-like shape — broader than the body, held flat
Rule this out if:
- Insects hover near the fruit bowl or food waste bin, not near drains
- Insects have smooth bodies and visible red eyes
- Population increases rapidly when fruit is present and decreases when removed
Correct fix
Deep drain cleaning to remove the biofilm mechanically — enzymatic drain gel left overnight, followed by physical scrubbing with a flexible drain brush to 1m depth. Flush thoroughly. Repeat for 2–3 nights. Insecticide does not resolve the source: killing adults without removing the biofilm results in continued emergence from larvae already present in the drain.
Fruit fly
Vinegar fly, pomace fly, Drosophilidae
Appearance
Smooth body, no visible hairs. Distinctive bright red eyes (visible under a magnifying glass or close inspection). Yellowish-brown body with black rings on the abdomen. Wings held back at rest (not tent-like).
Breeding source
Fermenting or overripe fruit, wine and beer residue, fermented sauces and vinegar, moist food waste. Can sustain a population from very small quantities of fermenting material — even wine residue in an unwashed glass.
Where found
Near fruit bowls, wine racks, compost bins, kitchen bins, recycling containers — anywhere with fermenting organic matter
Lifecycle
Egg to adult in 8–10 days at 25°C. Adults live 40–50 days. Rapid population increase in summer and autumn when fruit is seasonal. Can breed in drains secondarily if organic food residue accumulates.
Signs that point here:
- Insects hovering near fruit bowl, wine rack, or kitchen bin — not resting on walls
- Population increases as fruit ripens or overripens
- Red eyes visible on close inspection (distinctive — drain flies have dark compound eyes)
- Rapid increase in summer and autumn correlating with seasonal fruit
- Insects active and flying (not resting passively on surfaces)
Rule this out if:
- Insects rest passively on walls and ceilings and do not hover
- Insects appear near drains, not near food
- Population does not reduce when fruit bowl is cleared
Correct fix
Remove all fermenting sources completely — overripe fruit, food waste in the bin, wine residue in bottles or glasses, moist organic matter behind appliances. Clean drains secondarily in case fruit residue has accumulated. Apple cider vinegar trap (cup with ACV covered with cling film, small holes poked in) catches adults while the source is eliminated. Do not use insecticide — it will not prevent re-emergence from remaining breeding sites.
Why fly spray does not work
Aerosol fly sprays kill the adults in the room. They have no effect on larvae and pupae developing in the breeding source — the drain biofilm or fermenting organic matter. Adults will continue to emerge for 1–3 weeks even after all visible adult insects are killed. The population appears to return because it never stopped. Source removal is the only effective intervention.
Common questions
Persistent fly infestation despite cleaning?
If source removal has not resolved the infestation, a professional inspection can identify cryptic breeding sites and apply enzymatic drain treatment for severe biofilm build-up.
