What are pyrethrins and pyrethroids?
Pyrethrum occurs naturally and is derived from chrysanthemum flowers. These were first discovered during the 1800’s where parasites were treated successfully. The 6 tan coloured chemicals that are active insecticides found in pyrethrums are called pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are found in pet insect control products as well as are often used in household insecticides. Pyrethrins are quickly biodegradable, especially in sunlight.
Pyrethroids are synthetic near identical duplicates but are often more powerful than Pyrethrins, they are also designed to be more robust and take longer to break down.
What do pyrethrins and pyrethroids do to the environment?
Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are used on crops and livestock and in air they are broken down into the atmosphere. These compounds bind well to soil and are not usually taken up into plant roots when the crops are sprayed the chemical will land on the leaves, fruit or vegetables and from there it breaks into the air. The compounds are bind strongly to the soil which means that leaching into underground streams usually cannot occur.
Can I be exposed to pyrethrins and pyrethroids?
Because of the use of these products in food production exposure could be via air or even our food intake. Even pet shampoos could expose you. Lice treatments contain these compounds as well as treatments such as scabies. Common Mosquito repellants sold in our supermarkets also contain these.
What do pyrethrins and pyrethroids do to my body?
Your bodies quickly break down these compounds into metabolites and your body releases them through urine, feces or breath. overexposure remains a little longer in fatty tissue before breaking down and released.
Do pyrethrins and pyrethroids affect my health?
If large amounts of Pyrethrins and pyrethroids enter your body you might experience dizziness, headache or nausea for a few hours. No evidence has been found that pyrethrins or pyrethroids cause human fertility defects. Scientists do extreme tests to find harmful effects and treatments for these type of chemicals, unfortunately, animals must be used for these tests. There are strict laws however that scientists need to comply to with respect to animal care.
