The 6 tan coloured chemicals that are active insecticides found in pyrethrums are called pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are found in pet insect control products as well as are often used in household insecticides. Pyrethrins are quickly biodegradable, especially in sunlight.

Pyrethroids are synthetic near identical duplicates but are often more powerful than Pyrethrins, they are also designed to be more robust and take longer to break down.

Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are used on crops and livestock and in air they are broken down into the atmosphere. These compounds bind well to soil and are not usually taken up into plant roots when the crops are sprayed the chemical will land on the leaves, fruit or vegetables and from there it breaks into the air. The compounds are bind strongly to the soil which means that leaching into underground streams usually cannot occur.
