Behaviour
The most common small rodent in South African homes and businesses. Breeds rapidly; can produce many litters per year. Nocturnal but often seen in daylight when populations are high. Nibbles food, wiring, and packaging; leaves small droppings and gnaw marks. Can squeeze through gaps as small as a pencil.
Why you may be seeing them
Food, shelter, and warmth. Enters through tiny gaps, open doors, or with deliveries. Clutter and unsealed food attract them. Often first noticed by droppings, rustling, or damage to packets.
Often confused with
Young roof rat (much smaller when juvenile) · Shrew (different snout and behaviour; not a rodent)
When to get help
Droppings or sightings in kitchen or multiple rooms; damage to wiring or stock; commercial or food premises — professional baiting and proofing recommended.
